A lot of countries are on lockdown at the moment and research states that being sedentary is bad for your physical and mental health. Staying active during this time is vital for your health (both physically and mentally).
Being active can reduce the chance of you getting chronic diseases. Being active can also help with maintaining muscle mass and bone density. As we get older two things can happen to us:
1. Sarcopenia (loss of muscles)
2: Osteoporosis (loss of bone density)
The most important reason to get moving is that being active helps to keep your immune system working effectively. Exercise flushes bacteria from the lungs and airways, increases white blood cell circulation and raises body temperature, all of which help the body fight infection.
SO HOW CAN WE STAY ACTIVE DURING THE LOCKDOWN?
Here are my 5 tips to stay active during lockdown.
1. GO FOR A WALK/RUN (this depends on the country you live in & the regulations in place).
Early morning walks with the family, take the kids out on the pram, scooter, etc. Make it a family routine, walking 3-5 times, set an alarm up for the morning.
2. DO ALL THE CHORES
If it’s a sunny day, instead of using the dryer you can hang your laundry (saves money and is environmentally friendly too). Wash the dishes instead of using a dishwasher. Mow your lawn, gardening and cleaning up the garage (cause I know we Samoans are hoarders haha)
3. BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES
If you’re in a country that is on full lockdown. Then doing home workouts using your own body weight will be the best option for you. Exercises, such as push-ups, sit-ups, squats, burpees, jumping jacks etc will help you not only burn a lot of calories but will also speed up your metabolism when you amp up the intensity of the workout.
4. FAMILY FUN DAY
Have a specific day to have the family come together and play fun games either at the back yard or in the lounge room. Learn Siva Afi, play musical chairs, dodge ball, backyard soccer, catch and pass with the kids or even create a little obstacle course to get the kids run through it for fun. You could even make dance routines on Tik Tok for a fun way to stay active during lockdown.
And lastly,
5. DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF
When you’re sitting watching TV, don’t call out to your kids to get the remote for you. Stand up and get it yourself. Even when you’re looking for your phone or getting sugar/salt from the pantry, do it yourself. This may sound harsh but in reality, moving your body will help burn more calories.
