I was recently privileged to become a matai. I never wanted to become one because I always heard people complain about the faalavelave. I was told by my father that holding a matai title comes with responsibilities, but it is also the way to connect your family today with your ancestors. Showing that our connection to aiga is central to Samoan culture.
